SAFETY
FIRST

1.
Always follow the recommended safe working guidelines and instructions
of any tool you are using. Instructions and safety guidelines
are important. Although it may be tempting to "dive right
in" and start work, improperly used tools can be dangerous!
Take the time and learn the tool.
2. Work at a calm and reasonable pace. Haste makes waste...
and sometimes causes accidents too. Many accidents are the result
of taking short-cuts or attempting to work too fast. Take your
time, and be especially deliberate when you are doing something
for the first time.
3. Be especially careful and respectful of power tools.
Most of the repairs on this web site can be done with simple,
non-powered tools. Barbara K Enterprises, Inc. does not recommend
the use of power tools for those who are not familiar with,
or experienced in, their use. If, however, you plan on using
a power tool, be respectful of the tool. Take the time to read
the manual and the warnings carefully. Always use safety glasses
when using a power tool. And never use a tool that makes you
feel uncomfortable or unconfident.
4. Make sure all ladders are placed securely and on a
firm, stable surface. This holds true even if you are going
to be up on the ladder "only for a second", or only
for the first step. Also, make sure your ladder is solid and
in good condition, and never stand on the very top. Finally,
use your common sense. Reposition the ladder rather than stretching
to reach the work. And do not put yourself in positions where
you are leaning or off balance.
5. Wear safety glasses when striking any object with
a hammer or other striking tool.
6. Do not be overconfident; hammers (and other tools)
sometimes hurt. Nothing can protect you from the inherent risks
of repair. If you hit your finger with a hammer, it will hurt...
whether you have read our how-tos
or not. You can help yourself by working more carefully and
more deliberately. But there is no absolute guarantee of safety.
7. If you really think you can't do it, don't. We think
most people can do some simple home repairs themselves. But
you may not feel comfortable enough, even after becoming acquainted
with our how-tos. |
